Witte wieven

Witte Wieven
Witte wieven (white women) are from Dutch origin and can be found in the Saksische areas: Drenthe, Twente and Achterhoek. In the rest of the country a witte juffer (white miss) and witte vrouw (white lady) are known as well, but these are only ghosts in a veil of death. Witte wieven can also be a witch, elf, or a ghost. They live in the Dutch burial mounts. They are associated with mist and can only been seen when there is mist nearby.

According to mythology, their spirits remained on earth, and they became living spirits that either helped or hindered people who encountered them.

Sometimes they work in the field at night in exchange for Dutch pancakes. People went to the burial mounts to ask for healing, predict the future or help to look for lost things. But they did a lot of wicked things as well.

They would kidnap people who were in the field at night. They would try to lure people near their mounts with their music and songs. They also steal babies and put changelings in their place.

There are a lot of stories of people challenging witte wieven and only barrely escaping afterwards. If you are caught you will never be seen again and many stories tell of people hearing the moans and screams of the lost coming from the burial mounts.
